What It Is

H introduced me to the verbal ticklings of Dylan Moran and I fell in love. His sense of humor is totally on the point. Perfect.

He did a stand up thingy in Australia, it’s called What It Is. Youtube has all the bits of it, I’ll just post the first part for you to love. It’s a good substitute for exercise: you can laugh your abs into rocks.

Näkilaul (Mermaid Song) by Olav Ehala

Olav Ehala is an Estonian singer/songwriter/musical genius. He has written some of the most beautiful songs in the history of Estonian music. In my opinion. But I know there are those who share my love for his beautiful songs.

He has a very unique (and, consequently, widely mimicked) style. His solutions to musical phrases are unexpected but really really beautiful.

He has written a lot of songs for old Estonian movies and the Mermaid Song is from one, too. It’s from 1984 Karoliine Hõbelõng (Caroline Silveryarn, if you will, although that sounds so totally alien for me).

I tried translating the lyrics, but they sound so much more luring and enchanting in the original. (The video is bs, but that’s not important anyway.)

On land a lot of exciting things are frowned upon,
life on land is stiff and boring!
Have you ever been enchanted by the water

and seen how scales and fins glisten here?

Do you have any idea of the wonders of the sea?
Do you know that a moment is the same as a month?
Those on land only care about money and names
but in the water different things matter

Power and debt are weightless in water
no difference in what is behind or to come
Feel the wings growing on your back
cool and mellow in the flowing water…
cool and mellow in the flowing water…

You realize that tenderness on land is not enough
grasp at the charm of the flowing water
come closer to the water, closer yet, closer
little more to go from land to water
little more to go from land to water

Discovery Channel

I love Discovery Channel. I mostly watch Mythbusters, Braniac and How It’s Made. Especially How It’s Made. I love seeing things made from scrap. And I love doing things from scrap. And I love pop science. I never really was any good at math or chemistry or physics or any of those important things. But that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy them on TV, does it? No it doesn’t.

And I love the Discovery Channel ad song. It’s on all the time, but it never seems to be getting old for me.

I R Potato

The flu has caught up with me. I don’t feel ill or anything bad like that, but it has given me an excuse to do nothing. … like I need any excuses for that, though. But this time I don’t feel guilty about it so that’s like a whole new thing for me.

I have been watching movies for about twelve hours now. I just finished watching City of Angels. I remember when I first saw it. Gosh, I cried so hard! I was like:

why did she have to die? NO, he just got a life and he just started to feel things and then you take her away? No! what… what now… no… no-no-no he’s buying the pears! The PEARS! OH, the humanity! Why, god, why?!

And then I would watch it again, hoping that maybe this time things would go differently. As retarded as that sounds, that’s what I did. And then (surprise-surprise) it ended the same way. And I cried again. I gotta tell you I fought really hard not to break down this time. I wish I hadn’t. Now I have a headache.

Sally Mann

A while ago I found this beautiful photo on the Internet.

girl_smoking

At that time I just thought: wow, it looks so cool. I had no idea whose picture it was or why it was taken – I knew nothing at all. And then I completely forgot I had the picture.

Until one day I was at home, doing my best at being the worst couch potato ever, not wanting to go to bed, but being too damn tired to do anything else but watch TV. My remote control zapping stopped at History Channel. There was a show on about photography. I just watched and enjoyed and was totally mesmerized when they showed Sally Mann’s photos.

She had taken black and white photographs of her children. And the pictures were gorgeous, there was so much mystery about them. And then I saw it, the picture of the girl holding a cigarette. And I put two and two together. I have been in love with Sally Mann’s work ever since. She has an eye for things.

I especially love the Immediate Family series. I wish one day I will be able to document my family in such a way, with such honesty.

Nice. I love how the paints interact with the texture of the canvas. All pictures are taken from here.

The Vampire Diaries

In the spirit of the vampire craze that’s been going around town, I wanted to watch anything and everything vampire on TV. So I checked out The Vampire Diaries.

I have to say that it was not as divine as True Blood and not quite as sexy as Twilight, but it grew on me. Nina Dobrev doesn’t have that uniqueness to her that I would love to see in the leading lady. Nina kind of just blends in with the cast of the Hills or whoever. You know, the girls who all look like each other and you can’t really tell who’s who.

Ok, I’m not being fair. She’s pretty and she’s nice. But I can’t help but feel like there’s something missing from the picture. It’s not unfixable, though. I feel there’s hope.

- I know that although my comments may seem critical, I will be hooked nonetheless when the next episode comes out. I’m a sucker for vampires and I‘m not ashamed to admit it. –

Does anyone else see that Katerina Graham looks like Hayden Panettiere dipped in chocolate? I do. And I like chocolate. I ate a whole bar yesterday by myself. It was not pretty.

The choice of Paul Wesley as the eternal 17-year-old is a mystery to me. He is hot and so on, but 17? Come on. NEVER. I would never ever believe that he is 17. I forget about Stefan’s age all the time and every time someone mentions it I laugh. And that’s sad.

And now to the yummy part: Damon. Holy Jesus and his socks! Ian Somerhalder is hot! Damon is so gorgeous he makes Stefan look like a sad little puppy. And puppies are cute, no argument there, but you wouldn’t really want to pet one like you would Damon, would you? No, you wouldn’t.

Because that would be illegal.

2010

It’s almost here. I’ve got yummies in the oven, PB on the way with extra champagne and a headache sneaking at the back of my head. It’s all looking good.

I think Al and I are going to have a quiet evening together, with PB passing through, and then we’ll go and greet the new year in city centre. It’s only 5 minutes ride on the bus and we’re there so why not.

But you never really know how quiet an evening you’re going to spend until you wake up the next morning. Last time I thought I was going to have a nice quiet evening I woke up getting flashbacks of me and H staggering home at 4am, eating snow along the way. Not to worry – the thick snow had just fallen, so no yellow nowhere.

So what will the new year bring for me?

I will have my first meaningless and stricken with hopelessness twenty-something birthday.

With any luck I will graduate from university and get my BA degree.

Summer has to be spent working, but with the recession and everything I have no idea whatsoever how that’s going to work out.

And in autumn I will have to decide whether or not to go to school again. I would love to go and study something that I will actually be able to benefit from, something practical that will allow me to work with my hands. But, yet again, the recession has teeth and they might bite hard.

So who knows. But it will be a pretty interesting year, that 2010.
