Best space western EVER!

It’s just such a shame that it lasted for only one season. But it was a very good season, every episode was a pearl, so yay. I love the fact that they opened with a longer pilot and ended the whole thing with the 2005 Serenity that gave it a nice (and quite necessary) finishing touch.

Every single episode was good. Not one of them left me wishing for something extra. And the characters are all so coulourful. You can smell Joss Whedon’s touch all over the place. (It’s a good smell, that one is.) His characters are unique. And the humor! I love it. Just my kind of laughs.

And how about that Nathan Fillion, eh? I’ve mentioned his tendency to appeal to the visual senses before. It’s something worth mentioning again somewhere in the future. Even in Buffy, where he was naughty preacherman, he was still heavenly.

Still, though: such a shame. Only one season! What a waste of good TV. I read somewhere that its short life can be attributed to some Fox bigwigs who had to make someone look bad and so they did everything they could to undermine this show. That’s just awful. Bad FOX!

Firefly was Whedon’s best contribution to TV history. Even Buffy doesn’t compare. And that’s saying something. I simply hope that someone responsible for the one-season-fiasco is dying of remorse and guilt and other very very bad feelings. Only the thought of that someone burning in a special dimension of hell gets me through the day.

Roswell

Friday, November 13th, 2009

I know, I know, this is getting ridiculous. One teen madness after another like this is going to drive me crazy sooner or later (and seeing as I am spending most of my time watching these shows, I’m kind of betting on sooner). But I can’t help myself. There is just such luring simplicity in these shows that I can’t resist. Being 21, I won’t get to experience the feeling of being irresponsible much longer. Being totally safe and being the little girl whose life is totally organized by parental forces that have taken care of me so far will be a thing of the past. And I guess I’m trying to hold on to those old feelings. Responsibility is not exactly what I would call one of my strengths. So the transition from the little girl into an adult kind of puts a toll on me mentally. And instead of facing my demons I do what I can do best: escape.

Roswell is presently my main exit from reality. It’s such a sweet love story and I’m a sucker for those. Liz and Max and their never-ending quest to reach togetherness… And being a fan of the whole space scene makes my falling in love with this old favorite again inevitable.

I remember when it was first shown on TV. Me and Mari were stupid for it. The lingering of the first kiss between Max and Liz during the first season created such tensions that when they finally went for it I called Mari and we just screamed at each other with joy. Oh, fun times.

The show is getting pretty serious as it goes along. Murders and teen (alien) pregnancy, armed robbery… I just started season 3 and I bet there are more serious stuff ahead. I’m counting on it. Sure, the show is at times predictable and silly and lame, but just like with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its ‘flaws’, the flaws make Roswell that much more cuter.

Orphan

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

I was scared throughout the whole movie, but I think that was because I am such a sissy when it comes to children. If there is a child in trouble onscreen then I am always touched. I’m weak like that. Children are just always made out to be so innocent and cute that if they were threatened by a psycho ax murderer, then I get all tense and scared. But the makers of this movie knew that kids have a tendency of making us feel this way, so: good for you, yay.

I still need to complain about the whole Estonian thing. I think it’s kind of obligatory for me, as I am an Estonian. It was not as bad as I had heard it was – at least somebody spoke bad Estonian, instead of just taking the easy way out and making it all Russian. But if you’re going to make Estonia a part of the film, then just do it correctly. I mean, is it too much to ask to make this “Saarne Instituute” into a real Estonian word? Too much to ask to use Estonian on the documents, instead of Russian? Have an Estonian doctor speak with an Estonian accent instead of a Russian accent? Estonia is not Russia. And I know that this is a typical Estonian trying to convince somebody – if anybody – of something that is of absolutely no importance to them, but just… I don’t know. Just say that you don’t know Estonia, I won’t blame you, but don’t confuse it with Russia. We Estonians tend to have a low tolerance policy about that because of all the nasty things associated with being united with the Soviet Union and shit.

Other than that, I think it was OK. Good anti-adoption flick with fertilizer for xenophobia.

Crappy Transformers 2

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Cars, bikes and tractors turning into robots that speak with the Movie Guy voice, dogs humping each other, sexy girl who knows mechanics and looks like a Playboy model, the mom who is high and sends her husband to all sorts of warm and dark places while the dogs are humping each other… it was too much. I did not finish watching it. I’m sorry. Too much. Of crap.

The Boat That Rocked

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

I will never trust a review again. I was browsing through IMDB, looking for good movies. I read the first review for this movie and decided it must be bad, so I left it aside. Then, a week later, having drained isohunt from everything else that is watchable, I took the movie. And I LOVED IT!

The cast is simply superb, the humor is exactly my kind of humor, and the music – which is such an important part of this film – is timeless.

And how cute is Tom Sturridge! That angel-faced hunk. Reminds me of Kings of Leon. Here’s some images of him being hot.

American Latin

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

It is always funny when an American tries to read some text in Latin. It’s especially funny when it happens on screen. Usually it’s priests and such, trying to act all serious while reading “in nomine patris et filiis et spiritus sancti”, but you know, the pronunciation is messed up. I’m not accusing anyone of being stupid or anything. But it’s fun.

There is a lot of American Latin on Buffy. It’s hilarious. They read the passages, make serious faces, but they are so far off the side of Latin that is Latin that it diminishes the awe that I should be feeling. You know the drill: the end of the world is nigh, bad things are happening, people are dying… but then Angel starts reading something in Latin and you can’t help but smile.

I’m observant like that.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Friends

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

I can officially call myself an escapist.

I started watching Buffy again. Haven’t seen it in oh so many years, and I don’t remember almost anything about it – apart from some storylines – but I have thought about watching it again for quite some time now. And since we finally got rid of that time machine of an internet connection that had been taking us back to the 1990s every day for the past two years, and got ourselves a proper baby, the time is nigh to watch ALL the things I have yet to watch.

Starting with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

When Buffy was first on TV I was very young. It was on late at night and the next day was always a schoolday. Every time I got the go-to-sleep-now commands, but they were of no use. I loved the show. Of course I had activities and restrictions and non-developed biological impulses back then that prohibited the escapist demon from entering me, but today… Oh man, I’m doomed.

You might think that watching all those clothes from 1997, the bad acting (mostly David Boreanaz, I’m afraid), the cameltoes, the visible stunt doubles, the oops moments… that all this might make me say “Hey, that show is crap and boring” and go for a walk or something. You might just think that. And you’d be wrong.

Watching Buffy again has actually given me a better view over today’s vampire-madness. When talking about Buffy, True Blood and Twilight, the basic formula is pretty much the same: you have the pretty girl and the tormented vampire. That’s all you need to give the viewers their high. Add murder and mayhem and voila! a supershow. But hey, don’t get me wrong. I’m not judging. I am loving it. I’m totally over the I’m-totally-over-it period. Sure, it’s childish to take these shows seriously, but who said being childish is bad, right? I sure as hell hope that I will never grow up. Having said that I now remember MJ and feel sad.

From the hey-wait-a-minute point of view (I recognize my being fond of making my own adjectives) I have to say that all the vampire hotties of the aforementioned movies bare an uncanny resemblance to each other. Just take a look. Notice anything… OBVIOUS?

Got epiphany?

I’m not saying this is a bad thing. I’m just saying that we have seen these shows over and over again and we still love them. Which, I believe, says something about the power of our sexuality. Because that’s what these shows bring out in us. And I say: ride the high, honey.

Buffy is the first of many rekindled loves. Blame it on the vamp-craze that is flowing around like some nasty flu, blame it on the boogie, I don’t care. I just finished season 2 and I am in tears and love. Addicted. Hooked. Craving for more. I dread the day I will be watching the last episode of the last season, and the bettyfording of the mind that will come the day after that. I shall be the saddest sight to behold that day. And the week after that. Or two.

17 Again

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

You can sum this up with one sentence: “Zac Efron is fighting to get out of High School Musical.”

It kind of works, because here we see him lusting over an older woman and his words are those of a 40-year-old. So he is not entirely a teen girl’s heartthrob, but a bit like a man.

But it kind of doesn’t work, because he is the hot guy in high school who plays basketball. So he’s still a bit of a teen girl’s heartthrob.

It’s like a moving-on movie. He could not totally break out of his role as what’s-his-face HSM character, so he had to give the viewers what they wanted. But he also let them know that he wants to do something else. So the next time you go into a theatre to see his movie, you might not get the usual teencandy. But who knows. Maybe you will.

I know that I got his message and I say go for it, but I don’t know how everyone else feels about his plans. Looking at the picture below I would not bet on their wholehearted support.

Superbad

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

I have never seen a more realistic scene with drunk teenagers getting ready to have sex for the first time. Honestly. The slurring, the drunken confidence, the clumsiness… Jebus, it’s dead on.

I have not made up my mind about Seth Rogen, though. He’s kind of funny and cuddly, but there’s something about him that makes me think he sucks. A bit. I don’t know.

I think I’m overthinking it. It was a totally fine movie. I laughed. And that was the point, wasn’t it? One thing was weird though. Is it really THAT hard for teenagers to get alcohol in America? Jees…
